Just Greater Manchester

Academics across the School tackle deep structural inequalities through their research, teaching and public engagement activities as part of Just Greater Manchester.

With a population of 2.7 million people, Greater Manchester has the biggest city economy outside of London. It is also a conurbation of deep inequalities in opportunities and outcomes across key areas such as education, health, work and place.

Tackling inequalities

A weed growing out between some bricks
Our work concentrates on how to overcome barriers to higher education.

Just Greater Manchester brings together different themes of work to make a difference in our region.

For example Dr Steven Jones, Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education has been researching how to better understand how young people think and talk about university in effort to make participation in English Higher Education more equitable in a higher fees era.

The challenge is particularly acute in some areas of Greater Manchester because participation rates in HE are historically low.
