Tim studied BA (Hons) Town and Country Planning at The University of Manchester, and is now Strategic Land Manager at housebuilder Miller Homes.
My BA (Hons) and BPl qualification being recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) made me exempt from any further professional examinations.
Following graduation in 1992, I joined a private planning consultancy and gained sufficient experience to enable me to become a member of the RTPI.
In 1995, I entered the housebuilding industry, using my planning knowledge to specialise in the identification and promotion of strategic land. Such sites can take a number of years to work through the planning system before they are available for the construction of homes.
I have worked in this area for 22 years, with firms such as Beazer Homes, Wainhomes and Miller Homes.
My career has centred on the North of England, and I have settled in West Yorkshire with my wife and two children. My daughter Sophie commenced her Geography degree at The University of Manchester in 2014.
Studying at Manchester
My planning degree from The University of Manchester was crucial to me joining the RTPI, initially as a student member and then as full member following sufficient relevant experience.
My qualifications taken together have been central to my professional life and have enabled me to progress in my chosen career. Specifically, one of the course units focused on housing, while others studied local plan preparation and residential design layout. These aspects, and many others, are of direct relevance to my day-to-day working life.
