Fees

Tuition fees for home/EU students commencing their studies in September 2018 will be announced once confirmed by the UK government. As a guide, the 2017 tuition fees were £9,250 per annum for home/EU students, and are expected to increase slightly for 2018 entry. Tuition fees for international students will be £22,000 per annum. A-level

Grades ABB which should include at least one science subject 

Unit grade information

The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications.  Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes.

GCSE

English Language and Mathematics at grade C minimum or grade 4 in the newly reformed GCSE qualification.

International Baccalaureate

33 points in total (6,5,5 at HL including 1 science)

Irish Leaving Certificate

H2H2H3H3H3 including two science subjects

Scottish requirements

We normally require grades BBB in Scottish Highers taken by the end of S5.  In addition, Scottish Advanced Highers are normally required:

Two advance highers at grades A and B which must include 1 science, or one advance higher in a science subject and two highers at grades A and B 

English Language and Mathematics not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 grade C / Intermediate 2 grade C / Standard Grade Credit level grade 3).

Welsh Baccalaureate

A or B in Welsh Baccalaureate in combinaton with two A-levels. Actual required grade will be determined by the overall entry requirements for the course applied for

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Applied Science National Extended Diploma with grades DDM  which must include distinctions in all 7 mandatory science units

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma:

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Diploma with grades DM plus any science A level at grade A

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma:

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Foundation Diploma with grade D plus two A levels (AB) with one science at grade A

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate:

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Certificate with grade D plus two A levels (AB) with one science at grade A

OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma (CTEC):

We do not consider the Technical Extended Diploma for entry to this course.

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Diploma (CTEC):

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Diploma with grades DM plus an additional science A level at grade A 

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Foundation Diploma (CTEC):

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Foundation Diploma with grades DM plus an additional two A levels (AB) one of which must be science

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Extended Certificate (CTEC):

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Certificate with grade D plus an additional two A levels (AB) one of which must be science

Access to HE Diploma

45 credits at level 3 with a minimum of 30 credits at distinction (in science) and 15 at merit - each applicant will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Advanced Placement tests

The University welcomes applicants with the AP qualification. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Cambridge Pre-U

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken:

D3, M1/M2, M1/M2 in Pre-U principle subjects, or D3 or M1 Cambridge Pre-U in combinaton with two A-levels at AB. Required grades will be determined by the combination of A levels and Pre-U subjects being studied. One science subject is required.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

Home-schooled applicants

If you have followed a non-standard educational route and have been, for example, educated at home, your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course to which you applied. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the academic entry requirements as specified for the course. We will also require a reference which should be written by somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. Non-standard educational routes

Return-to-learn students are those who have had a substantial period away from any formal learning. Often such learners have pursued careers or raised a family. The University understands that students come from many different backgrounds, with varying qualifications, careers and skills, but they often bring to their studies a high degree of motivation and experience.

The University recognises that standard selection measures and procedures may not enable these learners to demonstrate fully their suitability for their chosen course. Where appropriate, admissions officers will seek and consider alternative evidence in order to give such learners equivalent consideration. Where they deem this alternative evidence meets entry criteria fully the learner will not be required to meet the standard academic entry requirements.

All suitable UK applicants are invited to a visit day in the first instance, which will involve a short interview with an academic member of staff. Applicants who are unable to attend a visit day (mainly students living overseas) will be made an offer based on their application form.

Course description

The joint Geology and Geography degree is run by the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and the   The School of Environment, Education and Development . You will be able to choose from a wide range of units taught by staff from both Schools which focus on Earth processes on all scales. You will look at minerals down a microscope and learn about mountain building, global climate and even solar system evolution. If you are not sure whether you love rocks more than physical geography then this is an ideal option for you.
