Overview

Tutorials are two hour small group sessions that are held weekly throughout Semester 1.  The core aim of tutorials is to help you settle into university life in Manchester and to teach you the fundamental skills required to learn Geography at University level, such as essay writing skills, referencing, and presentation skills.  Tutorials will also support the learning of your other Geography modules.  In Semester One, your tutorial will be delivered by the person who will act as your Academic Advisor.  You will meet with your Academic Advisor on a one-to-one basis each semester across the duration of your degree.  Through your tutorials sessions you will also undertake a critical review of a geographical text that corresponds with a core course module. You will present your critical book reviews as part of a group at the end of Semester 1. This will help develop both your skills in critical analysis and presentation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course unit, you should have:

  • Completed three independently written essays, and reflected on feedback in order to improve your arguments;
  • Contributed to the designing and delivery of a group presentation;
  • Developed greater confidence in your oral contributions to weekly tutorial discussions;
  • Fostered a greater knowledge and understanding of your course units through both oral and written work;
  • Demonstrated your ability to use a range of key university skills such as sourcing academic materials, referencing, reading and note taking, essay writing, revision and examination techniques;
  • Developed confidence and experience of team working to fulfill a task or project;
  • Demonstrated an in-depth understanding of a key geographical text.

Teaching and learning methods

Tutorials are delivered as small group sessions where discussion is the key to sharing ideas and developing Geographical knowledge.  Thus a key teaching method is your engagement and preparation; you will learn a lot more if you really participate in the sessions.  There will be lots of opportunities to receive personalized feedback and reflect upon your performance, both in tutorials and in the one-to-one Academic Advisory sessions. The work might involve working in smaller teams within the tutorial, and certainly in the case of the critical book review.  In between your tutorials, your tutor may set you small pieces of work such as time management exercises or preparing for your essay.  Tutorials are largely student led, so will be tailored to assist your academic performance wherever possible – if you would like to spend a little more time on referencing, for example, just ask your tutor.

All of the materials used in tutorials will be available on Blackboard for your reference, as will the Critical Book Review material.  You will also submit all of your work via Blackboard.

Assessment methods

The course will be assessed by two individual essays (of approximately 1,500 words) and a group presentation on topics that compliment your Geography modules.  In addition you will also undertake an initial essay, as well as various exercises and small group tasks that will form part of your formative assessment; i.e. these exercises will provide feedback to help you develop your work that contributes towards your overall tutorial mark.  You might be asked, for example, to present your ideas about a set essay, or discuss key Geographical ideas.  You will also be asked to write a reflective essay during your first week with us at University.

The combined mark of the individual essays will constitute 67% of the assessment.  The group book review presentation comprises the remaining 33%.

Feedback will be provided in the following ways during this course unit:

  • Extensive verbal feedback through Q&A, discussion and interactive activities within tutorials;
  • Detailed written feedback on all of your submitted work;
  • Formative feedback both written and verbal during the tutorials;
  • Verbal feedback on any tutorial issues – academic or pastoral – through emailed consultation or office hours;
  • Twice semester one-to-one meetings with your tutor;
  • A running  Q&A thread on Blackboard;
  • Detailed written feedback on the book review presentation;
