On choosing BA Management, Leadership and Leisure

Peter Nam Phan

I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue as a career, but the course offers a wide range of different course units and options that I am interested in, such as sport, events and marketing. You also have opportunities to find work placements and gain experience.

I actually found the course through adjustment. My A-Level results were better than expected and I tried to find a course at The University of Manchester, having already applied to another Manchester university.

Now that I’m here, it’s probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. In terms of advice, I would say don’t panic – I already had a guaranteed place at a university but I ended up finding something that was better for me.

On life in Manchester

The best thing about living and studying in Manchester is the number of things you can do, regardless of your interests and background.

Manchester is the home of two huge football teams, great bands, one of the UK’s largest Chinatowns, and one of the UK’s largest gay villages.

On my applied work placements

In my first year, I worked at Manchester City Council on a housing project for North Manchester - I think this boosted my employability because I was trusted from the start to work on a large-scale project and it was great to be told that my contribution was very useful!

In my second year, I worked as an Assistant Producer for a weeknight talk show that discussed recent news and issues that affected the LGBT community. This too boosted my employability because I was required to work to specific deadlines, whilst still producing good quality content for a large regional radio station.

On AMSoc

I’m part of the Applied Management Society, which is the Society for the Management, Leadership and Leisure course. As part of the society, students can organise huge social events for the course, such as a Christmas Party and an end-of-year ball.
