Cartographic Unit

With many years experience, and state-of-the-art facilities, we can meet any requirements for the visual disciplines of cartography and graphic design.

The Cartographic Unit has existed in one form or another since the 1950s, initially from within the Department of Geography. It now serves clients from the School of Environment, Education and Development and beyond.

Our staff have many years of experience. Combine this with state-of-the-art facilities and you can be assured that we will be able to meet any requirements for the visual disciplines of cartography and graphic design.

We are today one of the few dedicated cartographic facilities in the country.

We can enhance your work with topographic or thematic mapping to the highest quality, for publication in colour or monochrome at any scale and reproduced at sizes from journal to A0 display.

We can work from your rough drafts, field drawings, compile composite maps from multiple sources or analyse and plot from your GIS data, EXCEL and SPSS.

Cartography for the World Wide Web

Web mapping can be regarded as a major new trend in cartography.

We can work with your data to produce static or dynamic interactive web maps.

Desktop publishing

We can design layouts for multi-page reports, brochures, presentations and publicity material to the highest publication standards.

We use professional desktop publishing software to combine text, graphics, and images for results far superior to that available from basic word-processing software.

Enhance your conference presentations.

We can produce eye-catching full colour banner display panels or large format A0 poster displays.

We can repurpose existing print media such as fieldcourse manuals, teaching notes, workshop and laboratory manuals for the mobile digital medium.

Graphics and illustration

We can visualise your ideas with a wide range of graphics from technical illustrations through archaeological artefact illustration, 3D visualisations, logos to book cover design.

Graphics can be supplied for publication, on-screen presentation such as Powerpoint, or delivery via the World Wide Web.

We provide a photographic service, from location photography to high-resolution technical photography for research illustration.

All digital photographic images can be retouched, manipulated, rectified or combined to produce effective panoramas, mashups, and photomontages.

We can also digitise from original film negatives.
