Thomas graduated from MPRE Master of Planning with Real Estate in 2019. He is now a graduate surveyor for Cushman & Wakefield.
On what attracted me to the course
I was attracted to the dual accredited course (RICS and RTPI) as well as the fantastic case study that Manchester offers, given the high activity of real estate transactions, development and regeneration projects.
On how I decided on my career
It took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to do after A-Levels.
However, some work experience with a construction company inspired me to consider a career in the built environment.
The course at Manchester continued to develop my knowledge and understanding of the surveying profession and helped me to secure a number of summer internships.
The SUDN networking events were really useful in connecting with other students and industry professionals in a less formal setting.
On the aspects of teaching I found particularly enjoyable and beneficial
I really enjoyed the investment and finance, valuation, asset management and law course units.
I found the teaching was really interactive, with a good mixture of independent and group work.
The corporate real estate project stood out to me, as it provides experience of understanding a hypothetical client’s brief and working within a team to satisfy those requirements, which allows students to develop professional and client-based skills.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed writing my dissertation - it’s a lot of work, but it gives you an opportunity to really focus on an area that interests you.
This process definitely improved my research and data interpretation skills, both of which are fundamental tools in my current role.
On how my course prepared me for my career
The skills I developed whilst at Manchester have provided a great foundation of knowledge and understanding to build on.
I think the dual accredited aspect of the course provides a holistic view of the industry and informs students of the variety of disciplines available to specialise in.
On my career development since graduation
After graduating, I managed to secure some work experience in New York City, prior to starting my graduate role in London.
I am currently working as a graduate surveyor for Cushman and Wakefield in the Valuation and Advisory department, within the Investment Valuations team.
My main responsibilities are to assist in the valuations of mixed-use portfolios and single assets for Secured Lending and Financial Accounts purposes.
I assist with the valuation of mixed-use portfolios, for accounts purposes, which are appraised monthly, quarterly and annually.
Under supervision, I also compile full Red Book valuation reports for Secured Lending purposes on behalf of a range of clients.
On my advice to future students
University is a fantastic time to meet new people, get inspired and set the foundations for your future career.
Act on every opportunity that is presented to you and use your time wisely.
