Year of entry: 2018

How to apply

You should apply through  UCAS Teacher Training .

Applications or CVs sent directly to the University will not be considered.

How your application is considered

We work with numerous schools in Greater Manchester to offer the School Direct route into teaching; all routes involve the joint selection of candidates by schools and tutors at The University of Manchester.

When choosing a School Direct route, you should identify the particular arrangement that the School Direct lead school has made for delivery of School Direct with The University of Manchester, as this will determine your pattern of training.

You should also clarify the 'expectations' to employ by the lead school - while schools can offer you a permanent role at the end of the training, there is no guarantee of employment.

If your application is successful, the lead school will invite you to interview.

Interview requirements

Applicants will be required to attend an interview arranged by the school.

As part of our entry criteria, you are required to have at least five days' recent classroom experience, in a primary setting. If you are called to interview, your observations from your classroom experience will be used to inform a five-minute presentation that you will prepare for your interview.

While in school gaining your classroom experience, we advise you to consider the following presentation briefing

Presentation briefing

Reflecting on your recent experience in school and your own experience as a pupil, what do you consider makes an effective teacher? What skills and attributes does the effective teacher require? How will this inspire your future practice?

From your experience you may wish to consider:

  • The teacher's/teachers' organisational skills
  • What effective teaching and learning strategies did the teacher(s) use?
  • How did the teacher(s) meet the children's individual needs?
  • How did the teacher(s) ensure that their class was inclusive?
  • Behaviour management

Trainees must pass the Professional Skills Tests prior to commencing the course. Preference will be given to those applicants who have passed their skills tests at the time of interview however we will interview those who have not yet passed their tests. Please refer to the Department for Education  for further advice about registering to take your skills tests.

Fitness to practise / health requirements

Disclosure and Barring Service check
