To develop inter-personal, study and communication skills
On successful completion of the unit students will:
- have demonstrated that they are able to use a Personal Computer in a responsible manner for word-processing, spreadsheets, emails and accessing the internet
- have shown a familiarity with the sources of Earth Science information available in the John Rylands and SEAES libraries and how to use them
- have understood the scientific method and learned the basic skills of scientific writing in the form of reports and essays
- have begun to develop skills in oral presentation through preparation of a seminar and delivery to their tutorial group
- be aware of the meaning and seriousness of plagiarism and of the reasons to avoid it
- have begun to appreciate the importance of CVs in job applications.
Teaching and learning methods
Small-group teaching under the guidance of an academic tutor, supported by private study.
Weekly tutorials. 10 x 1-hour tutorials in Semester 1.
Each tutorial will involve, on average, about four hours of private study.
Supplemented by ten lectures on Study and Communication Skills.
Topics covered in tutorials will include some or all of the following:-
* using the library
* reliable sources of information
* understanding plagiarism
* extracting information from a published article
* written assignment(s): essay/report
* oral presentation
* careers (writing a CV etc)
* preparation for exams: specimen questions etc
* individual exercises designed by your tutor.
The course is assessed on the basis of the following assignments (marks weighting given in brackets):
1. Online Academic Malpractice and Health and Safety courses (Pass/fail, but required in order to pass the module and progress to the second semester)
2. 1–3 assignments in small-group tutorials (40%)
3. Reading and Writing Assignment (60%)
The nature and timing of feedback on work done for tutorials will depend on the type of activity being done or exercise being set. Verbal feedback on work done within tutorials (e.g. presentations) will generally be given by the tutor at the time. Written feedback on written assignments will be given by tutors on individual scripts, which will normally be returned within two weeks of submission.
