Why Manchester is a fantastic place to study Geography
Manchester is one of the oldest and best regarded Geography departments in the world, with an international reputation for research and teaching on both the Human and Physical sides of the discipline.
Manchester is a great place to study Geography. It was the world’s first industrial city and is now a vibrant 21st century metropolis. Set between three National Parks the city and its environment are an important resource for field teaching across all three years of study. Our core philosophy involves working closely with our students, and as a result we enjoy some of the best staff-student relations in the country. Unlike other Geography programmes, every course at Manchester has small group teaching so that you will enjoy high quality contact time with all our staff, including our world leading Professors.
Manchester Geography has been rated 6th in the UK and 10th globally. These rankings are based on reputation with employers and academics, so you can be confident that a degree at Manchester will bring you into contact with the cutting edge of geographical knowledge and equip you with the skills that employers value most. When you add in our commitment to fieldwork in each year and our innovative Geography Employability Programme, it is clear that Geography at Manchester offers a world-leading degree experience.
Our BA and BSc Geography programmes give students huge flexibility and choice, with a large range of modules and field courses in the UK and overseas. We also offer two four-year programmes.
Geography with International Study gives students the possibility to study for a year abroad at a partner university in Europe, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore or the USA, while the MGeog offers students a fourth year in which to develop highly specialised knowledge and further refine their research skills. As one of last year’s graduates commented: “It truly has been a life changing three years in the best possible way and if I had to choose again? I would pick Geography at the University of Manchester every time.”
