The University appointed its first professor of education in 1899 using benefaction from the philanthropist Sarah Fielden. This began a tradition that has continued to this day, with Helen Gunter our current Sarah Fielden-endowed professor of education. Naming our seminar series after Sarah recognises her ongoing influence and honours her legacy.

The aim of the series is to promote our programmes of research within the University. Each seminar is led by an MIE research leader who presents on their area of expertise, before facilitating a discussion of key implications for theory, research, policy and practice with audience members.
