Social responsibility is at the heart of everything we do.
Our approach to social responsibility highlights the way we are making a difference through our teaching, research and public events.
Our core aim is to understand and improve the uneven relationships between society, the economy, and the environment.
Making a Difference Awards 2018
The Making a Difference Awards 2018 saw six School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED) colleagues recognised for their commitment to social responsibility.
The School's six successes came in three categories, highlighting the breadth of support our colleagues have shown to social responsibility over the past year.
Outstanding benefit to society through research
- Winner - Professor Neil Humphrey and the HeadStart learning team (Manchester Institute of Education) for HeadStart learning
- Winner (emerging impact) - Dr Sarah Marie Hall (Geography) for Everyday Austerity
Outstanding contribution to social innovation
- Winner - Dr Jonathan Huck (Geography) for #Huckathon: Mapping hidden homes in post-conflict Northern Uganda to deliver medical care
- Highly Commended - Seyedehsomayeh Taherimoosavi (Planning and Environmental Management) for Tackling fuel poverty with artificial intelligence techniques and blockchain technology
Outstanding local engagement
- Highly Commended - Craig Thomas and team (Geography) for The Old Abbey Taphouse: A STEAM hub in a pub
- Highly Commended - Caroline Boyd and team (Global Development Institute and the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute) for Be//Longing

In The University of Manchester's 2017 Making a Difference Awards, SEED was recognised in eight awards with a further two certificates of commendation.
- Claire Hoolohan (postgraduate research student supervised by Alison Browne, Geography) - Highly commended for emerging impact in the Benefit to Society through Research category.
- David Spendlove (Manchester Institute of Education) – His team were highly commended within the category of Inspiring Communities: staff involvement, for Initial Teacher Education: Over 150 years of producing inspiring teachers for local communities.
- Hamza Arsbi (Global Development Institute student) - Won the category of Outstanding Contribution to Social Enterprise, for The Science League.
- Joanne Jordan (Global Development Institute) - Won the category of Outstanding Public Engagement: staff, for The Lived Experience of Climate Change: A Story of One Piece of Land in Dhaka.
- Jonathan Darling (Geography) - Highly commended in the Outstanding benefit to society through research category, for his work Producing urban asylum: shaping policies for the housing of asylum seekers in Britain.
- Leandro Minuchin (Architecture) - Won the award for Outstanding teaching innovation in social responsibility, for his Prefigurative architectures project.
- Sakib Moghal (Geography student) - Won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Equality and Diversity, for the Manchester Open Mind Network.
- Sarah Marie Hall (Geography) - Highly commended within the category Outstanding Public Engagement: staff, for her Everyday Austerity Exhibition.
Lucia Banjo, who graduated with BA (Hons) in Management and Leisure in 2017, won the President’s Student Volunteer of the Year Award. Lucia set up the Big Change Society as a way to connect and engage students with the Big Change campaign.
The Big Change is part of Manchester’s city-wide approach to tackling homelessness and encourages members of the public to consider alternative giving: donating money to the Big Change fund, rather than giving money, food or items directly to rough sleepers on the streets.
Focusing on environmental change, governance, policy and practice, social injustice and urbanism.
Our students graduate with the skills and tools to exercise social leadership.
Developing partnerships with stakeholders for mutual knowledge exchange and social benefit.
Sustainability informs our teaching, research and governance.
