Dr Kelly Burgoyne

Dr Burgoyne, a Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester, focuses on reading and language development, specialising in educational interventions. Her research includes experimental studies of language and reading, large-scale longitudinal studies of children’s cognitive development, and Randomized Controlled Trials of educational interventions. Leading two evidence-based programs: Reading and Language Intervention (RLI) for children with Down syndrome and Parents and Children Together (PACT), a parent-delivered early language teaching programme.

Many parents and carers of children with additional needs and/or disabilities endure prolonged, taxing and costly battles to secure appropriate, effective support for their child’s education and development.

Now is the time to...

  • provide parents and caregivers with accessible information and support;
  • address regional inequalities and the issues councils face in meeting the needs of children with additional needs and disabilities;
  • enhance accountability for services catering to the needs of families and children with additional needs and disabilities;
  • provide adequate funding for crucial services including speech and language therapy and early intervention;
  • improve mainstream school inclusion and intervention through research-informed training and support.
